Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students live in a rural farming community. Most of the students are first or second-generation immigrants. Nearly all of the students' parents work in the fields nearby. The students at this school are devoted to graduating and moving on to college to live the life that their parents want for them.
Historically these students have underperformed in mathematics, but with increased funding and use of technology, we have had drastic improvements.
My Project
I have polled the students and asked them what their favorite candies are to create this list. The candy in this project is composed of the most requested and anticipated candy from my students.
Students work very well when given positive reinforcement.
I use the candy both as an incentive to try in class, but also as a reward for doing what is supposed to be done. It can be used to motivate, but also to help me build vital relationships with the students. Incentives may not be the intrinsic motivation we are looking for in the students, but it's a great place to start.
