Our school has a high concentration of poverty and students without access to the resources we hope all students have access to. The GHS chess team is a great variety of students ranging from top-performing students to students with special needs. We challenge each other to succeed in the greatest brain-game: chess! We believe that all students can be successful in chess, and we've proven it over the years with great team success. Guilford serves students from all across Rockford, and GHS stands out with dedicated students and faculty who each for greatness daily.
My Project
I've coached chess teams for years, and I've always struggled to give all of my players the feedback they need in a timely fashion. With the introduction of some great new, open-source chess websites, it's finally possible to do everything online. For the past couple seasons, we've hobbled along using my personal computer and the occasional student laptop. This season, the GHS chess team made great strides, and they really need to be more independent. With the addition of team Chromebooks, each player will be able to immediately analyze and share their games with each other. This way, even while I'm still busy coaching other players, the team can be actively engaged in their own, self-detected self-study! It's an exciting time for chess, and all we need is the hardware to access the free online tools.
