Chess: Teaching Logic Game Changer!

My students need 18 games of Chess and several complimentary games (Mancala, Chinese Checkers, Scrabble) to support their development of logic and metacognition.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My student made a move against her Chess opponent. I asked her why she made that move, and she responded the typical "I don't know." I realized that my students need a larger context for developing logic and the skill of metacognition. Games are a huge motivator for them, so Chess it is!

My students attend a charter middle school in southern California.

99% of them qualify for free or reduced price lunch. About 40% are African American and 60% Latino. The majority of my African American students go home to a broken family and a plethora of problems that hinder their experience in school. About 50% of my Latino students have parents who do not speak English. Overall, only about 5 out of 140 of my students' parents are married and live together. I have a little less than 15 special education students, and about 30 that are English language learners. Most of my students are at or below a sixth grade math level. Last year, 22% of our students scored Proficient on the Math CST. My students have not been taught strong character or interpersonal skills. Our students are not given the necessary services or resources that they DESERVE!

My Project

I am requesting funding for Chess Boards and a couple other complimentary games (Mankala, Chinese Checkers, and Scrabble) to support their cognitive development. It is clear that my students need extra support in developing logic and metacognition skills (reflecting on their own thinking). Chess is a game that integrates several skills that support proficiency in math - it requires the application of rules, the creation of patterns, anticipation, and other higher-level cognitive skills. My students need a different, more social way of learning these skills in class. I have already tested Chess as a great way to get students engaged. Chess also teaches students important skills very subtly, such as playing by the rules, fairness, and thinking before acting. I plan to make this very explicit when teaching with Chess. I plan to use this in my shortened periods and will be starting a Chess Club. The complimentary games will be used for students getting tired of chess.

My students deserve a more interactive way of learning logic skills besides throwing math puzzles at them.

Students want more opportunities to be independent, socialize, competitive and learn using game mechanics. I strongly believe Chess will create a stronger culture among my students and develop their social skills and connections that have been absent as of yet. There is so much more to Chess than learning and playing by the rules and winning!
