My Project
At our school, chess is taught to third graders to help build social-emotional skills like problem-solving, good sportsmanship, impulse control, and intellectual self-esteem. Students are able to apply these skills to their learning in academic areas and on the playground. Chess is an important part of our curriculum that builds these areas and many more!
Year after year, students look forward to playing chess and learning new skills.
For some students, playing chess at school is the only opportunity they have to refine these essential twenty-first skills. A few years ago, we had the opportunity to expand classrooms and service more learners, however, we have been sharing chess pieces and boards between these newly expanded classrooms and the older classrooms. We need more chess boards and pieces in order to let all students play a fair amount through the school year.
