Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach three high school chemistry classes (total of 96 students) at Castlemont Business and Information Technology School in Oakland, California. CBITS is under the Oakland Unified School District. My students reflect the demographics of East Oakland, mostly African-American and Hispanic. They are concerned that chemistry does not relate to the real world around them. Weekly laboratory experiments go a long way to enforce the reality of chemistry, but there is still the nagging question of relevance. How does chemistry relate to their real-world experiences? One experience common to all the students either through direct contact or by family contact is the hair care and beauty industry. One way for students to become aware of safety literature that is related to the chemistry that they will be learning is to link their knowledge to a practice they are all familiar with. I will teach organic chemistry and biochemistry lessons based on the hair care and beauty safety literature to emphasize the chemistry aspects. Therefore, the relevance of chemistry is brought home to my students. In addition, the students will perform a valuable community service by passing out the safety literature to hair care and beauty professionals in the Millsmont area of Oakland. The literature will be procured from the Labor Occupational Health Program (LOHP) of the University of California, Berkeley. A total of 10 copies of the safety guide, "Hair Care and Beauty Professionals", will be disseminated by all three classes.
