Chemistry Conductivity Testers: Does It Light Up?

Help me give my students solution conductivity testers so we can learn about what types of solutions will illuminate lightbulbs.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I'm moving to a new school this year! The students I will primarily be working with are all interested in pursing a STEM career, particularly in the medical field.

My 10th graders deserve all the support in the world to achieve their future career goals.

As their chemistry teacher, it's my job to make that happen! Especially after a year of virtual learning, these kiddos are craving some action in the lab. That's why I'm asking for help to build up my classroom materials with lab supplies to provide a hands-on approach to chemistry.

My Project

In our class we spend our 3rd unit learning about chemical bonding. To introduce the unit, I show students an introductory phenomenon: that tap water conducts electricity whereas pure (DI) water does not. We then go on to test other types of compounds as solids and as aqueous solutions to determine what types of substances will illuminate the lightbulb. This leads students to discover differences between ionic and covalent compounds.

To tie this phenomenon to my students' lives, we spend time learning more about the area in which we live, where our water comes from, and how we take care of our water systems.

By including place-based learning in my students' educations, they gain a deeper appreciation for how chemistry affects their daily lives.

My department currently has access to 2 conductivity testers. This makes running labs more difficult since we have so few supplies. I'd love to gift my department more tools to help our students run hands-on labs and be involved in their community through their education.
