This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are learning to use a variety of instruments with different timbres to create musical compositions and sound effects. We need to add a chime tree to our collection.

My students are a culturally diverse group in an urban public school with a high percentage of economically challenged families.

Our school has students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade, and I teach most of them! I am the music teacher, and therefore I teach every student from pre-kindergarten through sixth grade. I also teach band and chorus for those seventh and eighth graders who choose that elective.

My Project

One of the most effective strategies I use in elementary music education is providing opportunities for my students to create "sound stories" in which they use musical instruments to add sound effects and mood music to great works of literature. My students are highly motivated by the opportunity to play authentic musical instruments. We need a chime tree to create sound effects such as wind blowing through the trees, or fairy wings fluttering by.
