Our school is located in a low-income area. Most of our students are not able to afford to participate in cheerleading outside of school. In our district, middle school cheerleaders are encouraged to cheer at football/basketball games, and pep assemblies. They are not given resources to help them train to be better athletes. In fact, they aren’t even recognized by the athletic department. The cheerleaders are considered a club and left on their own to fundraise or pay out of pocket what they need each year.
This doesn’t stop our young women though.
Each year, they learn two routines and compete locally and nationally as a competitive cheer team. They work with choreographers, tumbling, and stunt coaches. They practice every day never giving up to compete at a level most of them would never get the opportunity. They are three-time National Champions despite all of the challenges they face.
My Project
Our families work incredibly hard to provide for their students but extras for school activities aren't always possible. We are hoping to be able to provide uniforms to our students so that cost is no longer a factor in their participation when it comes to cheer. We hope by limiting cost, more students will be able to participate. Cheerleading in our school focuses on leadership, cooperation, team building, and athleticism. Most of our cheerleaders come in with little to no experience but we hope they will fall in love with the sport and be able to carry on with it in high school or college.
