We are a culturally diverse, rural eighth through twelfth grade high school. Our school has embraced the concept of a flex-mod schedule. Students can fit anywhere from six to eight classes into their schedule allowing more time for AP classes, college-credit classes, electives and CTE courses. Students are given at least four hours personal learning time (PLT) throughout the week which they can use as they choose to complete homework, work in groups with their peers or meet with teachers during "office hours."
To enhance this PLT time, I am creating a makerspace STEAM environment where students can gather to create, invent, tinker and discover using a variety of tools and materials.
The media center has seen an increased number of students utilizing the space during their PLT time. I love giving them opportunities to maximize their creative genius in areas designated for Coding, Electronics, Engineering, Robotics, Visual Arts and DIY/Crafts. In addition our students can choose to develop their critical thinking skills through assorted board games.
We have high expectations for our students meaning we want them to leave high school fully prepared for whatever they have chosen, whether it be college, vocational or straight into a career field.
My Project
We have been blessed with technology for our makerspace area. With all our devices there is a limited tech space so we need charging stations to organize and charge them. This project will greatly improve our ability to use the technology we have.
These USB charging hubs will help make sure all our devices, including iPads, Kindles, Sphero Robots, Lego Mindstorm, Cubelets and more, are optimally charged and ready to go at all times.
In addition, since I have a large library I would like to have a few smaller charging hubs set up around the room so the students will be able to charge their devices on the go and not have to fight for outlets. The four Anker USB wall chargers I have chosen are highly rated with 4-10 available ports on each device. In addition, I have selected two desk sorters to hold our iPads and devices while they are charging and additional cables.
Please help us keep our tools charged and organized so that we are always ready to go and may use them to their full potential!
