My Students

Our high school is located in a small rural coastal community in North Carolina and is comprised of approximately 850 9th - 12th grade students and about 70 teachers. Situated between two large military bases, many of our students come from military families. These students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, our school maintains constant student growth and state test scores that are significantly higher than the state average.

Our dedicated teachers and motivated students don't let anything get in the way of learning and growing!

This year has been especially challenging as the weather has brought a destructive hurricane followed by flooding and more rain. Following the storm, schools had been opened as shelters and remained closed for a period of three weeks. Portions of many schools remain under construction and teachers and students are making due with the space and resources we still have available for use. Currently our school district has over 700 students and over 70 teachers displaced from their homes as a result of the damage.

My Project

As a Chromebook 1:1 school, our students have been issued individual Chromebooks that they take home each night. As a result of weather (recent Hurricane Florence and an onslaught of rain) and the number of students who have been displaced from their homes, many students have lost access to a reliable place to charge these devices.

Our students need to have a secure area for charging these devices when they don't have a reliable place outside of school.

We have opened our media center doors to students to be able to utilize the area after school hours for this purpose. However, the charging station would allow for a secure place for these devices.
