As you know from my essay, I was lucky enough to have three classes of marine science. However, that put a strain on my resources and I had to write a new project to procure extra specimens. The project quickly funded, and the specimens also arrived in an extremely fast manner. \r\n\r\nMy students were intrigued by the starfish. Not only does the specimen help with dissection, but it also helps with information about that basic phylum- the echinoderms. We learned that starfish specifically has an oral and an aboral side. Exhibiting radio symmetry, there is an Exhibiting radio symmetry, there is an eye spot at the end of each ray. They could not believe that most of the starfish consisted of digestive gland. They enjoyed tracing the water vascular system from the mad repo rite to the tube feet! Overall, it was an awesome experience.\r\n\r\nThe dog fish was obviously more complex, but extremely important because it also mirrored some of the very anatomy that we have! The largest organ in the dogfish is the liver, the same as us. We were able to discern males from females, looking for claspers on the male. Students cut into the stomach and removed the contents of it. They also removed the contents of the intestines. They were pretty grossed out by thinking they were playing in dogfish poop. \r\n\r\nThese are just a few examples of some of the things that we learned today all because of you.\r\n\r\nAll in all these two activities are quite educational as well as fun. I do appreciate DC for being so special to my classroom. He shouldn't have been, because he could have listened and heard the squeals and delight of all my high school teenagers loving this activity. Yes, they ran to fill the balloon bag with air. The sun quickly heated up the bag, and then it began to rise. Thankfully, it was tethered to the kite string, and away the bag went. I must admit there were a few that were lost because their string ran out and they weren't paying attention or it got tangled up in a tree, or the bag got a hole in it because they tried to punch it back skyward, but nevertheless it was a great activity. \r\n\r\nWithout DonorsChoose this whole lab and scene wouldn't quite be possible because the bags are 20 or $25 apiece, and I have quite a few students. One of the profiles is called the organic layer. We know that animals like termites are part of that organic layer.
