Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
For some of my students, school is not a priority; their priority is making sure their siblings are taken care of and that they have food at home. Some of my students are in foster care or are homeless. Yet, despite all of these challenges, they do value their education. The problem is, that they find their education as something they need to complete and not something they enjoy. That is where this project comes in.
Our woodworking class teaches our students skills they can use for their entire lives.
They gain skills in using hand tools and power tools. They learn about measurements and safety. They are able to create projects from scratch that they can take home and share with their families.
I would love to be able to let them create something the entire family can use. I want them to make cutting boards. These boards are food safe and can be a daily staple in their kitchens. They will be able to take pride in their work when they see family members using something they made. Some of these supplies will be able to use on other projects as well and will benefit hundreds of students.
