Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a school that has the focus, "Everyone can be a leader." Students who attend our school are leaders of their own lives, leaders in the classroom, leaders in the school, and some even carry it out to be leaders in our community.
These primary students impress me every day as they find their voice and are empowered to grow into independent leaders.
We still have our struggles with things out of our circle of control, such as coming from low incomes, ADHD, Autism, Speech issues, or other OT needs. These leaders face it as a challenge to overcome and one that will only make them stronger.
My Project
The best way we can teach, and the most engaging way for children to learn, is through stories. I strive to create an environment for my students that challenges them to improve their reading comprehension as well as their social understanding through what we teachers call a “print-rich environment.” There are few moments in a child’s life that fill them with as much pride as the one when they can declare “I did it! I read it all by myself!” Literacy skills aren’t the only benefits we provide through a varied collection of stories, however. Even more important is the chance to read a book you can see yourself in and personally connect to.
Far too often have I seen children of a minority background feel alone when none of their classmates, not to mention none of their favorite characters, look and talk like they do.
Reading a story that reminds them of their families, home, and culture not only incentivizes them to keep reading but also creates a feeling of belonging rather than a perception of being “other.”
Inclusion works both ways. In addition to helping children from minority cultures feel more accepted and special, it also exposes every child to different ways of life, helping them better understand the diverse world we live in. Exposure to other peoples and cultures, especially in the books they love, help to develop empathy and understanding within all students. The experience of connecting to a character of another background or ethnicity is yet another crucial aspect of reading, one that I wish to provide to all my students. I hope you can help supply these children with a rich variety of stories that will foster an environment of inclusion and diversity, better equipping them to become confident and empathetic human beings.
