Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are special because they have the strength to persevere through challenges many adults have not been through, in order to achieve the best education they can. This past school year my school dove into how trauma effects the brain. I reflected about how the students in my class have been resilient through poverty, domestic abuse, relocation as refugees, and a variety of other experiences.
And yet, these experiences never define my students.
This past year my students explored and researched possible careers. I had the privilege of teaching future media artists, chefs, a train conductor, CEO, and automotive technician. Students learned that their opportunities are endless if they were willing to work and push themselves. All students in my classroom are expected and required to do their best, no excuses.
I do not yet know the names and stories of the students coming into my classroom this coming school year. I can guarantee they will each have a story, personality, and goals uniquely their own. My job is to support them on their journey to being well, rounded members of society.
My Project
As an educator, it is my job to make sure that all my students are provided with the most beneficial educational experience possible. I often try to meet the needs of my most needy students, who are often my lowest readers. These books are third grade reading level and will be used to support PA state standards.
This project is to support my students who don't need my help as much, but still deserve the best of what I can give.
The books will be used to start literature circles. Groups of six kids will begin by reading the first book of the series. Then, they will work with a partner to read the other books and compare and contrast characters, plot, central message, and events. This will provide in depth understanding of these skills, using authentic texts.
