Our school was the first school in our county to begin using the Responsive Classroom. This type of learning supports the various types of children we have in our diverse elementary school and encourage strong community building. Our students, as well as all children, need certain social skills and positive behaviors taught. They also need strong role models around them and need to see different adults reading and celebrating literacy. There are so many social skills that can be supported through books such as resilience and persistence, making mistakes, honesty, feelings, and respecting differences. Even books that are silly and based on humor have a place in school!
My Project
Our students and teachers love books and make reading a special part of each day. Along with motivating our students to read books they enjoy, our teachers are always working to increase our students' academic achievement and social-emotional skills. We are proud of our school community! Each month we focus on a different character trait. These books help students relate these character traits to characters in books.
We believe that teaching good character is just as important as reading, writing, math, social studies, and science.
These books will be read aloud to all of our 3rd graders. The variety of books helps students relate to different characters such as the characters in Thank you Mr. Falker, Boxes for Katje, and Brothers in Hope.
We also look at the vocabulary in these books. The students are introduced to new vocabulary. They are encouraged to use these new vocabulary words in their writing and speaking.
