My Students
My students are young, innocent, enthusiastic, and vibrant. They come to school with expectations for excitement and engagement. My students demonstrate strength, perseverance, and commitment at six and seven that I have not seen in many. Ninety-nine percent of the student population at the school is low-income in an urban environment, and 78% of the school population are English Language Learners.
My twenty-three first grade students deserve to have doors opened for them, experiences presented to them, and tools to success provided for them.
These students deserve to have the best education with no "if, ands, or buts" due to the environment that they live in. My classroom is full of minds that can be agents for change in our world. We are continuing to build a classroom library that represents the world around us!
My Project
This year I have many students who are engaged and excited about reading chapter books. As we have been growing our decoding and comprehension skills, I would like to be able to engage and enrich students' reading through use of chapter books during our guided reading time. Part of developing a reading identity is having choice about what books are read. As a first grade class, we are working towards chapter book reading, but these books are not plentiful in our classroom library.
Being able to allow students the opportunity to choose what books we reading during guided reading will motivate them to read more and will enhance the reading community we have fostered.
Every time we add books to our classroom library, students have more access to texts that they can not access otherwise as students in our community do not have easy access to a local library. My students are the leaders of the future. I want to ensure that they are well-read and develop lifelong reading skills habits that will lead them to success!
