My Students

I have a diverse group of 3rd grade students who all have a heart for learning. Each morning, when I meet them at the door, they are ready to start a new adventure with me.

I have 25 students in my homeroom and 25 in my afternoon class.

They consist of several special education, gifted and talented, Dyslexic, African-American, Marshallese, and white students. Our student population is growing due to the opening of a poultry factory three years ago. We are receiving several more Marshallese students who have a need to learn to read and learn our language.

My students are enthusiastic and energetic learners who love interesting ways to learn. They are hands-on learners that look forward to each challenge. I look forward each day to seeing their smiling faces, each with their own unique personality.

My Project

Our 3rd grade classes have adopted the Connections Phonic Program to help all students to learn to read. It is awesome and my Marshallese students are blooming, but we no longer have a textbook to use to teach the skills. Chapter books and read a louds are a perfect way to get those skills in plus immerse our students in text that they will fall in love with and plant that spark to want more.

There is nothing like a book in your hand to get the real feeling of reading.

Kids need to see the words. They need to learn to appreciate the structure of how stories are written. We can not get this with just passages. We need a book so they can analysis the characters, visual the setting and predict how the problem will be solved. Chapter books take you on adventures and I want my students to have that so I am asking for class sets of chapter books.
