Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are a motivated hard-working group of 5th graders. They are diverse learners - ELL, SPED, and typical students with several students with documented attention issues.

We are an inner city, 100% free breakfast and lunch school.

While we are a magnet school, most students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. We use the performing arts to infuse their learning and try to provide opportunities for all aspects of their personal, academic, and social growth. My students are incredible and so eager to learn everything put in front of them. They are inquisitive and risk takers who want to do their best, and as their teacher I want to provide them with every vehicle possible to enhance their growth!

Their early primary school reading instruction was interrupted by COVID-19 and unfortunately their mastery of phonics, reading and writing skills have been affected. While I am working on specific skills during instructional time, pleasure reading is frustrating for some as they are reading at a low level. Not being able to access grade level reading materials is hard enough during class time, but to be limited to simple books during independent reading time is frustrating and can be embarrassing. These decodable chapter books will allow students to immerse themselves in longer, age-appropriate, and accessible chapter books! Hopefully encouraging their continued hard work towards reading proficiency. Teachers Pay Teachers has many digital and printable resources that will support comprehension.

The Science of Reading informs us that proficient readers and writers develop with strong phonemic awareness skills; decodable books are essential instructional materials needed for students to master phonemic awareness. These materials will be used daily in a small group instructional setting and during their independent reading time.
