Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Switching over the graphic novel section from spine out to forward facing in bins was the best thing I could have done for our library. At least once a day, I hear "Wow, this makes it so much easier for me to find what I want" or "This looks a lot nicer than it used to."

Students judge a book by its cover.

They're not picking up a book based on its spine. They're picking up books that look interesting, are recommended by a friend, or are part of a series they already enjoy.

Book bins allow every book in a series to stay together so students know how to find the next when they're done with the first. The bins can also be used to keep books by an author together; we have students devouring Ronald Dahl and Gordan Korman.

The book bins also make students take ownership of the library. We have a group of students called Library Leaders who help with displays, set up check-in and checkout computers, go to classrooms to help get books returned, and so much more. By putting chapter books into bins, these students will take over the shelves, too, and really feel like they are a part of every aspect of the library.
