Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My schools is a Title I school in a low income, high poverty area. It is the biggest elementary school in the state with around 1500 students ranging from preschool to 8th grade. The majority of the students who attend this school are English Language Learners. Often times they come to their first day of school not knowing any English at all.
As a Speech Language Pathologist, I work with students across all grade levels with varying disabilities.
Each student is unique in their needs, but they have the same goal: to learn. No matter the background, or the disability, I see the desire to learn new things in each one of my students.
My Project
This year in Speech Therapy we are taking a new approach to helping our students learn their speech sounds! Research shows that auditory bombardment, repetition, modeling, and practice all contribute to student success with articulation skills. By having access to Speech Buddy interactive tools and new articulation cards, we are able to provide our students with new ways to explore their speech skills.
Our new Articulation Stations will help us provide more of the repetition and practice that our students are in need of.
One of our stations will allow for student led practice using laptops and technology. By having access to this technology, our students are able to play games, listen to sounds, and receive auditory bombardment to help them hear the correct speech sound while working independently. The headphones will help facilitate independent work and allow for auditory bombardment of sounds. Another station will focus on various articulation activities to provide a hands on approach to learning speech sounds. The Speech Buddies will help our students not just hear the correct sounds, but also feel where the correct tongue placement is to make the sounds. By creating stations, we are allowing our students to learn their speech sounds in a variety of modalities!
