My students from rural Northwest Georgia attend a Title 1 school where the poverty level is concentrated to such a degree that each child receives a free lunch and breakfast. Currently, these bright and eager-to-learn students are engaged in a content-rich curriculum in my ELA class where they are exploring Greek myths and legends.
Each day, they come to my classroom excited to discover more about the world by reading complex texts--their appetites for knowledge are insatiable!
The next unit in our curriculum focuses on medieval England, and the students cannot wait to climb aboard their time machines and zoom from ancient Greece to 11th century life in a rural English village.
My Project
My students are learning and growing by being exposed to quality and complex texts. Our first unit explored Greek mythology and ancient Greeks by using The Lightning Thief as our anchor text. We've also read excerpts from Edith Hamilton's Mythology and Homer's Iliad. I have watched my students' curiosity come alive by reading these centuries-old works. While these students live in rural Northwest Georgia, each day their minds are transported to 800 BC Greece.
Being exposed to this quality literature is expanding their worlds beyond the farms and the tall pines of their homeland.
However, they do not have access to the next units' texts, and they so desperately want and deserve them.
Play a part in these enthusiastic learners' lives by adding a building block to their educational foundation! Thank you!
