Challenging Literature for My Eager Students!

My students need 20 copies of "Fallen Angels" and "Of Mice and Men", plus the teacher guides for those books and 15 copies of "Strunk & White Elements of Style".

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Karlin's classroom raised $596

This project is fully funded

My students are all second-chance kids. They arrived at this program because they stopped attending an old school, got pregnant, became involved with drugs or gangs, or encountered violence at school and needed to get out. Most of them are over-age for their grades and wouldn't be able to graduate without switching into an alternative program like this one. We are not a dumping ground for "bad kids"; we are a challenging program with high admissions standards and high expectations of all our students. We keep the classrooms small (a maximum of 15 students, typically 11-12) and provide each student with as much personalized attention as they need to succeed, and hopefully go to college.

Our school year has just started and I am thrilled to find so many talented, voracious readers in my English classes. They not only read on their own, but also seem eager to take on the challenges of the academic year ahead. I want to be able to provide them with the materials and support they need in order to have the most successful year possible. Many of them are seniors looking to go to college next year, and they will need all the help they can get in order to make it there.

If I were able to provide my students with novels that are linguistically, thematically, and intellectually challenging, I firmly believe I could help my students reach new skill levels previously unattainable. They have already shown an above-average interest in reading, so it would be frankly unacceptable to let them graduate without being pushed to their absolute maximum potentials. By making them stronger readers and more capable writers, I could help them get into the best possible colleges and trade programs.

It is only with your help that I can give my students the chance to be expert readers and writers. In order to help them build their skills, I need to be able to give them materials that only you can provide. If you believe, as I do, that all students, no matter what economic background or race, deserve the chance at an exceptional education, please consider donating to my project. My students need it!
