Chair Pockets: A Place to Hold Our Treasured Books

My Students

I teach a combined first and second grade classroom in a small rural school. If you were to take a peek inside our classroom you would notice the quiet hum of voices that permeates the air during work time. My students love working together, helping each other, and sharing their thoughts and ideas.

My students are compassionate!

One time in particular comes to mind. One of my students was having a bad day and ended up missing STEM class. When the rest of my class returned with their beautifully crafted wood cranes to take home, one of my students offered her crane to the child who had missed class so he would feel better and have something to bring home.

My students are also incredibly active. They love moving to the different areas in our classroom when given work or free time. They spread out around the room with their various materials such as clipboards, crayons, pencils, and books. They especially enjoy laying underneath their desks with a good book to read.

My Project

My first and second graders are amazing learners! They learn and change so much over the course of the year. However, the most amazing transformation is when they go from picture readers to word readers.

My goal as a teacher is to not only help my students learn to read but to help them LOVE to read!

My greatest desire is that my students see reading as a form of entertainment. And they do. At snack time, I offer my students the option of sitting in the lunch room where they can talk with friends, or they can come to our classroom and read quietly to themselves or to me. Many times, my students will choose to come read, which warms my heart. They pick some books from our classroom library, find a spot, and settle in to enjoy a great story. I believe chair pockets will give my students a spot that is just theirs to hold their favorite books. The chair pockets will also increase the life-span of our books because the students won't put the books in their desks where they get banged up quickly.
