My school is a small high school, an alternative school in a large urban public school system. Students here are ones who have been placed in our building after having difficulties or lack of success in the six very large traditional high schools we have. They come to my much smaller art class with much untapped creativity and abundant energy, and perhaps with a few difficult behavioral issues. Over three-quarters of them come from low-income households.
I teach a multicultural mix of students with heritages typical of those found within large metropolitan cities.
We are blessed to have smaller class sizes and my art lessons are tailored to each individual student, not to a rigid curriculum. I believe this way of teaching greatly impacts their success.
We need chairs for our artroom. We paint themes on all of our chairs, but often our chairs break and we need to replace them. This project will help us replace them, paint them and clear coat them so they last as long as possible.
Chair painting will give our art room additional character and will impact every new student entering our classes.
Immediately they will be engaged in sitting down on artwork. Often they will get ideas from this very first moment of a chair they would like to create for our room. And when they do they will leave their mark behind.
