My Project

We’re in need of replacing two worn-out kilns purchased twenty-five years ago. I’ve been doing repairs on them repeatedly, but they now barely get up to temperature for glazes to fuse properly.

Students love the projects they’ve been able to make, expressing a hands-on materials-based form of artistry they will keep for years to come.

Parents too appreciate their kids are learning a form of education that has been continuously reduced over the years. Working in clay and glazes, understanding the chemistry of the art form and heat work reinforces students’ grasp of materials science while participating in rare experiences during the school day.

The unique ability for students to express artistry through science, learn in-depth an art form with thousands of years of tradition reaching into the present era makes for a greater understanding of the world they will someday acquire from us.

Adjacent to the art aspect, we use our kilns for other projects requiring heat work; understanding the heat science behind spacecraft returning through the atmosphere intact, understanding how heat effects change materials, and the industrial uses of ceramic materials in products we take for granted every day, for instance, tile, kitchen and bath fixtures, porcelain and other coating systems, and the curing of materials like rubber, etc. The list is endless!
