My Students

My school is located in a low-income neighborhood in Colorado. My diverse class comes from varied backgrounds. Some students live with extended family and depend on support from community outreach programs. Other students speak English as their second language and strive to strengthen their communication skills.

The one common thread that ties my class together is their eagerness to learn new things.

We believe strongly that we are crew, not passengers so all of my students take an active role in their academic journey.

My Project

Often times the skills teachers want their students to master cannot be found in a book. As a teacher I want my students to collaborate effectively, persevere through difficult challenges, and articulate their different ideas.

One way to make these 21st Century skills come to life is by having students engage in various STEM activities!

Our class is asking for different resources that can be used at our STEM center. One of the materials is a chain reaction kit. This kit contains a selection of items students can use as they discover the effects of force, gravity, and momentum. Our class would also like Building Bricks STEM challenges. These cards have students use building bricks to create different structures such as drawbridges. Students in our class would visit the STEM center weekly and work together to complete the various activities. As students refine their "soft" skills they will be able to apply them in academics as well. These are the lessons that will truly stick with them!
