Three habits we highlight at our school are wonder, determination, and advocacy. As an Expeditionary Learning school, we encourage all of our students to deepen their sense of wonder. An excellent way to foster this is through STEM. Using materials, both familiar and unfamiliar, in a novel way challenges learners to question what's around them. Often STEM tasks require us to maintain a growth mindset. If at first we don't succeed, we must exhibit determination and try again. Another habit we strive to teach our students is advocacy. As teachers, we need to introduce our students to issues we face both locally and globally. Our crew would love a set of STEM activities that emphasize solving problems such as oil spills and access to fresh water. Today's students may just solve tomorrow's challenges!
