Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school does not have adequate resources to provide a world class education for each student. I believe education is the great equalizer and every child deserves the best we can provide for them. My students come to me with limited background knowledge about nature, science and a keen sense of curiosity.
Our students are inquisitive, and motivated.
When given proper resources they can be extremely creative in solving real-world and classroom problems. Our students would like to explore science at a much deeper level. In the State of Virginia our science curriculum for seventh graders require a high degree of lab experimentation. The students must produce artifacts that demonstrate content mastery; the students are more engaged when they have an opportunity to explore abstract concepts with hands-on activities.
My Project
Learning about cells can be a struggle for young scholars. A cell is microscopic and therefore must be visualized as an abstract construct. The tiny structures inside a cell don't look like anything that students are familiar with. In the past, students memorize the cell structures.
The MaKey MaKey circuit kit will allow students to create animated "Cell Models" that can light up, speak aloud, make sound, or anything their imaginations can come up with.
Using the MaKey MaKey kit with a coding program will help the students learn logical thinking skills they can apply to other learning in novel ways in the future.
