My students need new books such as the "Hunger Games" trilogy to engage them in independent reading and art materials including construction paper and markers to celebrate and share those books.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
You know how you love a book so much that you can't wait to tell someone about it? My students need help discovering the books they love and the supplies to share those books.
My students attend a predominately African-American school in the city and are incoming freshmen who are reading below grade level.
They are good and lovable students, who have not had the support at home to enhance their reading or to nurture a love for reading.
My Project
No one walks onto a basketball court a great player, you practice and get better. Reading is the same way. The more you read the better you get. Students select books that they want to read (they are required to read 6 a semester), and when they finish their book, they create a project demonstrating a reading skill they used. For example, they create a poster of facts that relate to a topic in their book. Or create a mask that is symbolic to a character in the book.
In the last two years that I've taught this class, I've seen students' reading levels increase from 1 to 5 grade levels.
We are seeing a real difference, not only in reading levels, but in overall school performance. As a result of increasing students' reading level, it is now easier for students to access the text in their other classes. You will help with improving our students by helping to expand our class library and supplies to do fun and engaging learning products.
