Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My fifth grade students view each day as an opportunity to learn and explore the world around them. They develop their minds with new skills every day. My incredible students are filled to the brim with energy and enthusiasm for learning. My school is Title I and located in a low socioeconomic community with limited resources. All of my students receive free school lunch and are classified as English language learners. As part of a dual language program, my students must meet grade level standards in both English and Spanish. As a result, my students must be organized and able to quickly access materials for the appropriate language and activities of the day.
My Project
My students need a variety of art materials, books and supplies that will support a variety of lessons and activities that celebrate our classroom diversity. My students need an HP portable photo printer. This device will allow my students to print their photos in class. We will use these pictures for a variety of activities including "My favorite part of me"-a project where they take a self portrait and explain why they are celebrating that unique part of themselves (e.g. their legs for supporting them, their eyes because they look like their family, freckles, etc) My students will also be able to print photos for their projects and about the author pages. Having photos attached to their work will enable my students to showcase their projects and gain confidence to celebrate their diverse selves.
It is important that students see themselves as important parts of the classroom; the classroom should reflect their diverse backgrounds, and the rich cultural heritage they bring with them.
We need a variety of art supplies including construction paper and face cut-outs in a variety of skin tones to make collages and other art projects. We also need multicultural markers, crayons and colored pencils, so that my students can color people that look like them. These supplies will help my students complete self portraits and various other art activities. We also need a variety of picture books for our classroom library that will diversify our current collection, and that reflect my students and their interests. My students want new stories about women, people of color, and amazing children like them.
With your support, we can create amazing projects and read incredible books that will reflect my student's amazing diversity and creativity.
