I am a 4th grade regular education teacher at a rural school in a high-need community. I am a third year teacher with very little resources, especially reading materials. My book shelf is empty and without a previous donation of books through donorschoose, my students would have stop visiting our classroom library altogether.
After seeing the faces of my students when a previous shipment of donated books arrived, I couldn't help but put in another donorschoose proposal for books. It was as though the entire class was transformed. The students couldn't wait to read these. In fact, I passed around the stack to my early finishers and the other students hurried to finish so that they could read a brand new book. Even my non readers wanted to participate in the excitement. We were even going out for free time on the playground that afternoon, and I actually had students that would have preferred staying behind to read their newly discovered book. HOW EXCITING FOR EVERYONE! In the previously fully-funded proposal, I only had enough money to request about 15 books, but this time I want my request to be only books. I knew that books were expensive, and that is partially why we didn't have any in our classroom, but I didn't realize exactly how expensive they were until this most recent request for books.
Your donation will be very helpful in transforming my entire class into readers. We only go to the library once a week, and some students finish their book before it is time to go again. This will be the class's personal library that they will be welcomed to at any time. I also requested several chapter books at 4th grade levels because my students do not always check out chapter books. I want them to become interested in these.
I had one of my strong readers who picked out one of the brand new chapter books and began to read with excitement. It was time for a transition and she instinctively placed her bookmark in the book. I was able to lean over and tell her, "I will leave the bookmark in here because this will be your book until you are finished reading the whole thing, alright?" She looked up at me and said, "OK" with a grin from ear to ear. I felt so fulfilled with my job at this time that I couldn't wait to come home and type up another proposal for more books. Thank you for your donation in helping to ignite literacy in my classroom.
