Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

My students have worked hard throughout this academic year. However, keeping students charged during the final weeks of school has been challenging in keeping them focused on learning. Throughout my career, I noticed a downward trend in attendance, and students became disengaged in learning after the standardized testing period had ended. Therefore, I want to complete a mini project on the history of Juneteenth with students to refocus them before concluding the school year. Many of my students need to be made aware of and learn the history behind Juneteenth. They know of the over-commercialization of this "Freedom Day" but not the historical legacy highlighting education and the many achievements of African Americans. I will select and use teacher-made resources from Teachers Pay Teachers to engage students and give them digital resources they can use and share with their families. Although this holiday occurs when school is out for summer break, it would be a bonus for students to create a Juneteenth t-shirt so they can wear it to exhibit their pride in where they come from and honor their identity. This learning experience will encourage students to participate and wear their t-shirts to Juneteenth events in their neighborhood communities. Your kind donation will give students materials, supplies, and resources for lesson planning activities and t-shirt making.
