Celebrating Great Artists

My students need 10 watercolor sets, collage making materials, 24 paint panels, 25 sets of Craypas, a new set of paint brushes, and 4 Art Education books.

My Students

"I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any other way - things I had no words for," Georgia O'Keeffe said, and it is something that I believe is true with many of my students that come into my classroom.

My students come from homes where there is little money to buy crayons, paints, and many of them have never even heard of oil pastels.

They enter my classroom hoping for the best education I can give them, and one way I do this is by teaching them about great artists!

My Project

I teach a unit to my students that is wildly popular with students and parents alike called "Great Artists." I expose my students to various artists like Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Vincent Van Gogh. They study about each artist's life and then write a 6-8 line biography that contains information about their chosen artists. Then the student create a work of art that is a copy of one of their artist's works. For example, they would create a copy of Van Gogh's Starry Night. Then the student has to create their own art work based on the artist's style. I then ask the students to create their own project using whatever style and material they would like. While they are creating all of these projects, I ask the students to memorize the biographies of their artists. They in fact, become their chosen artist! The students take great pride in creating costumes and giving personality to their characters. After everything is ready, we have a living art museum!

Your donation would help me by ensuring that I will have enough watercolors and other supplies for all the students in my class.

It will also give them the experience of working with a canvas to paint on like the great artists that they are studying. I know that my students cherish this unit and it is one that they remember for a lifetime. One of my former students, now an 8th grader, told me recently that she was excited to go on a trip to Washington, DC because she could see Little Ballerina by Edgar Degas
