Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

One of the foremost gifts of reading is that it allows you to see yourself in books; to know you are not alone in your situation. Bibliotherapy is powerful.

The other great gift of reading is that you learn about experiences and others different than your own, which helps to build compassion, empathy, and awareness.

It helps to create humans who are willing and able to see situations and individuals that have different perspectives and through the eyes of others. When asked, they will be able to define and give examples of compassion as it relates to celebrating families.

We will use several of the books in library for whole group situations. Students will listen to the books about foster families to learn about the importance of celebrating that families have different looks and structures. ​​Students are able to gain a new perspective and grow in showing compassion not only to those in their classrooms and friendship groups, but also as school and community whole.

Additionally, the books will also be used by various staff members in small groups and 1-1 by such people as our Social Worker, Community in School Specialist, Homeroom Teachers, and for students to check out. When days such as Mother's Day, Father's Day, Grandparents Day, and other celebration days occur, and displays are created, we will have a wider variety of picture books to show that families look many different ways!
