My Kindergartners are creative, energetic, fun kids. They are a diverse group of learners including students from different racial, ethnic, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds. They also represent a wide spectrum of cognitive abilities and socioeconomic levels. There is so much cuteness in kindergarten. They love to play and explore!
My Project
The playhouse is an integral part of my kindergarten classroom. It is the most popular area for choice time. Dramatic play is an important part of a child’s social, emotional and cognitive development. It gives children an emotional outlet, teaches conflict resolution, supports literacy and encourages kids to act out scenarios from the real world, pretending to be different characters and experiencing “walking in someone’s else’s shoes” which helps to teach empathy. I am requesting clothes and baby accessories for the new babies and dolls of different races and more props for role playing different careers.
My goal is for my students to see themselves represented in all areas of my classroom, and to understand and appreciate the differences that surround them.
I want them to feel included, accepted and proud of who they are, where they are from, their culture and family, and to respect those around them.
By adding multicultural dolls and accessories, as well as a variety of props, it will help make diversity the norm and reflect the students, their families and their experiences.
