This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My high school is the most culturally, ethnically and racially diverse in our city. We have over 60 languages spoken in our building and, routinely, welcome refugees from around the world. To celebrate and support our students, I have engaged in many international learning opportunities. Two years ago I traveled to Ghana for professional development and returned with several drums, rhythmic percussion and African flutes.

I added an African Rhythm unit to my music class.

Last year, I had students who were born in Ghana, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, (now) South Sudan and Tanzania. They demonstrated an exceptional level of content engagement and pride during this unit. we all shared pictures from Africa with the class. I'm asking for some drumsticks to continue and expand this unit to other classes.
