Celebrating Diversity in First Grade

My Students

The first graders at our Title I school are a precious group! They come from homes with parents who love them as much as any parents can, but some of their circumstances impede them from having everything that they need.

Several of the students came to first grade without attending kindergarten, which puts them at a severe disadvantage academically and socially.

The students are eager to learn, and love being at school each day. They are blessings to everyone! I am grateful to be able to have the opportunity to teach them and watch them blossom throughout the year.

My Project

My students come from a variety of ethnic backgrounds, family makeups, and cultures. I think it’s important for every child to feel that their unique qualities are worthy of celebrating. I also want to encourage my students to see the positive aspects of cultures that are different than their own. I plan to read a different book at the beginning of each day to set the tone for the day and to elevate the students’ self esteem. Many of the students live in situations where they aren’t given the support and encouragement they need to feel like they can achieve their individual goals, but focusing on their value as human beings will motivate them to take risks and challenge themselves to be lifelong learners. They deserve it!
