Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My awesome second graders come from a very low socioeconomic background with the majority falling below the poverty line. They are mainly English language learners (72%) and many of them live in homes which house multiple families under the same roof. The median income is well below poverty level, with some being homeless. Some of these seven- and eight-year olds have the sole responsibility of taking care of their younger siblings while their parents are working, with many parents working more than one job. Others are latchkey children.
Our school is Title I and 80% of the children receive free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch.
In addition to the many challenges that these hard-working students face, they also are coping with the fact that our school is situated in a high crime area with frequent gang activity. My children have extremely limited access to technology in their homes, yet with all these obstacles, my students come to school with much enthusiasm and an eager desire to learn.
My Project
Promoting multicultural awareness and diversity appreciation in the classroom is of utmost importance. Children need to learn about other cultural holiday celebrations in order to gain a deeper understanding and appreciations for the world around them. One of these cultures is the celebration of the Diwali Festival. Diwali is one of the most important and colorful of the Indian festivals. It is a festival of joy, splendor, brightness and happiness. Diwali is celebrated with great enthusiasm by Indians. During this time, people decorate their floors with Rangoli. This patterns are generally made with white powder or rice flour, chalk, colored sand or flowers. Students will create their own Rangoli designs by using colored sands. First, they will draw their Rangoli patterns on cardstock paper then using the colored sands, they will pour them over their designs thereby creating beautiful colorful Rangoli masterpieces.
