Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our schools overarching goal is to give every student a voice in our community and to teach them that they matter. Though our students arrive in middle school with a vast range of skills and abilities, we treat every one with the same amount of support, respect and care. We see our students as people too, and while we strive to help them grow academically, their personal growth is just as important.

As the 6th grade English teacher, I have 100 students in their first year at a new school, with reading abilities ranging from 1st through 6th grade.

A majority of my students speak English as a second language and are growing up in homes where Spanish is the primary spoken language. I take on this challenge by making learning and reading fun and accessible to all. My students' drive and positivity keeps me motivated every day.

My Project

The vast majority of our students are bilingual. They are growing up in Spanish-speaking neighborhood within an English-speaking city. Many of them are the first generation of their family to go to school in America. So often, the students themselves act as translators in the communications between their teachers and their parents. As a teacher, I feel it is my duty to help our students achieve literacy in both Spanish and English, since that is the reality they live in. By providing students with the option to read the books we are covering in class in Spanish as well as in English, they can improve their reading skills in both languages.

At our school, we embrace diversity and meet our students at their level.

A major benefit to providing Spanish-language versions of the books we read, is to help those students who are still learning English to be able to follow along in class. Without the Spanish-language texts, students find themselves unable to participate in conversations because they are unable to follow along as quickly as the English-speaking children. It is so important for all students to have access to the material we are reading so they can participate in discussions and be a part of our community!
