The vast majority of our students are bilingual. They are growing up in Spanish-speaking neighborhood within an English-speaking city. Many of them are the first generation of their family to go to school in America. So often, the students themselves act as translators in the communications between their teachers and their parents. As a teacher, I feel it is my duty to help our students achieve literacy in both Spanish and English, since that is the reality they live in. By providing students with the option to read the books we are covering in class in Spanish as well as in English, they can improve their reading skills in both languages.
At our school, we embrace diversity and meet our students at their level. A major benefit to providing Spanish-language versions of the books we read, is to help those students who are still learning English to be able to follow along in class. Without the Spanish-language texts, students find themselves unable to participate in conversations because they are unable to follow along as quickly as the English-speaking children. It is so important for all students to have access to the material we are reading so they can participate in discussions and be a part of our community!
