Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The beautiful students in my diverse class of second graders deserve to see themselves represented! The majority of them come from low-income homes and are learning to speak English. I want to help them feel included and important in all areas. I believe that when they open up a book or a box of markers, crayons, or colored pencils, there should be colors they identify with. When they reach for a sheet of construction paper for a self-portrait, they should be able to find one that looks like them. No child should feel left-out or less-than because the art materials they are using to depict themselves don't look a thing like they look. And no child should be indirectly taught that their peers are less important than they are because they aren't represented.
A collection of books celebrating the diverse backgrounds of my students and multicultural art supplies that showcase a magnificent array of skin colors will help my students see themselves and their peers as important parts of our class, our community, and the world.
The books we are hoping to receive will be read aloud and discussed as we learn about inclusion, equality, and the importance of each individual to our group. As part of our classroom library, my students will be able to access them freely, helping us to build our classroom culture around the strengths our differences bring to the table. The multicultural art supplies will be a constant presence in our classroom, giving my learners real opportunities to see and be seen by their peers and by themselves as they draw and create. We will help build each other as we celebrate and create with the magnificent colors of us!
