My Project

Comic books often explore many themes of everyday life. Over the past few years I've been building a comic book library for students to learn and enjoy. In honor of Black History Month I'm continuing to build the library by requesting graphic novels which highlight Black characters from the DC comics and Rocket as well as Static are popular characters created by an all black creative team as part of DC's milestone initiative. This purpose of the project was to present more diversity in comics. I Am Batman tells the story of Luscious Fox's (Morgan Freeman's character in the movies) son who takes on the mantle of Batman in the future after Bruce Wayne is killed. Far Sector highlights a black woman member of the Green Lantern Corp. I'm also requesting Miles Morales The Black Panther Party graphic novels tells the story of the activist group in a comic book format. I'm

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop.

The world changing genre of music created by black Americans. Many of my students love hip hop music and always making tik tok videos to it, but some of the lyrics and messages in these songs make me cringe. In an effort to offset some of the negative messages I'm requesting Living Loud by Public Enemy leader Chuck D and The Come Up and oral history of Hip Hop. These titles look at the history of hip hop and where it's going. I would love to teach them the origins of hip hop and the principles it was founded on.
