Celebrate Our Differences in Literature

Help me give my students a literary glimpse into the world of Max and Kevin, otherwise known as Freak the Mighty!

My Project

Through the novel, Freak the Mighty, my students will see a real example of celebrating our differences through friendship. The main character Kevin Avery, known as Freak, has Morquio syndrome, which makes him tiny. He befriends a large boy who has struggled with learning difficulties all his life. Together they create a wonderful new hero in Freak the Mighty.

My students will explore ways to celebrate our differences through the reading of this novel and the completion of a final project: Appreciating our Differences from Teachers Pay Teachers.

As a part of their final project, students will come up with their own plan of how to help those in their community who face challenges, whether in their health, learning, or sensory needs. We will select one project to put into action as a school and strive to celebrate our differences as a way to come together as a supportive community.

Student success will be measured in the final project implementation for our school. We will measure success based upon what percentage of our school community participates in our chosen project. Our goal is for 75 percent participation. In addition, we will participate in a final socratic seminar in which students can voice those things that they have learned about themselves and about being a part of an inclusive community that supports on another.
