My Students

Students in the "highest poverty" category, often do not have opportunities to follow their dreams. I am all about making the impossible possible and their dreams for the future an obtainable reality. My students come from countries around the world. They have traveled from Africa, Asia, South America, and across North America, as children of refugees and families that move frequently, due to low-income earning ability. The unique and difficult experiences of my students are what make my students some of the most powerful and determined young minds you could ever hope to meet.

My students have experienced adversity.

In our classroom, we rise above it. My students are resilient and brilliant. They have incredible leadership abilities. They help each other and understand the power of teamwork. We build a classroom community and care for each other. When one student succeeds, they all celebrate the success achieved by their classmate. These bonds are forged with time, shared tribulation, and the universal truth that every single student in our class has enormous potential.

My Project

We want to celebrate diversity with first grade flair! In our classroom I want every student to feel respected, appreciated, and see as the multifaceted individuals they each are. This goal will be fostered by the materials in this project.

Our budding first grade scholars come from very diverse backgrounds; this project's purpose is to provide a fun and engaging artistic springboard into discovering and celebrating the cultures of all our students!

A Kid's Guide to Asian American History, African American History, Native American History, and Hispanic American History will get us started with activities and celebrations to incorporate into our classroom.

The art supplies and materials for crown making will encourage each student to look into the mirror and see the power in their unique identify. This celebration will be aided by literature that reflects the #Iseeme motto of giving students shining examples representing their own culture and style. These titles include Yayoi Kusama, Frida Kahlo, ¡Todos a Celebrar!, Pocket Full of Colors: The Magical World of Mary Blair, and Vietnamese Children's Favorite Stories.

Celebrated individuals from many cultures will be represented in the puppets, and a macaw parrot puppet will gleefully tell stories of the many cultures of our truly diverse classroom. A five CD library of world music including songs from dozens of countries will round out our year-long daily cultural celebration.

Please consider investing in our multicultural classroom. Our students are the future - and the future should see themselves reflected every day through empowering multicultural classroom literature, art, music, and storytelling.
