Ms. Andrea, Ms. Maggie, and Ms. Brooke are occupational therapists who work with children with special needs from PreK to 8th grade. We work with a variety of intellectual, physical, and sensory impairments in our school. We work with an amazing and diverse set of students both in inclusion and the self-contained setting for students with multiple disabilities.
Our students are working to be as independent as possible and need adaptations and modifications to everyday school activities.
Most of our students are in a low-income area but are great students. They are fun-loving, determined, and bright minds.
My Project
As occupational therapists, we help our teachers reinforce cause and effect concepts through play. Battery-operated toys that can be activated using a single switch can help teach cause and effect. The switch will turn the toy on and off with a single activating push.
When a student grasps the concept of cause and effect toys, it opens the gate to using augmentative communication devices.
This gives a voice to students who can't use their own and gives them the ability to make their wants and needs to be known. Batteries are crucial to allow us to use the cause-and-effect toys.
