My students need more high interest books that are at their level. Graphic novels are a great way to get students excited about reading.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our 4th grade consists of 85 AMAZING students who live in and around Southwest Detroit. Many of our students speak English as their second language and receive free and reduced lunch. Many face obstacles in the class as well as at home. Despite their many challenges our students come to school excited to learn and experience new things. My students are finding their love of reading and I want to give them as many opportunities to experience literature of all sorts as possible.
My Project
Many of my students are reading below grade level. The books at their level are seen as 'little kid books'. I am trying to find high interest books that are lower level. Graphic novels are a great way to get students interested in reading (it is like reading a really big comic book)!
Most of my students are English Language Learners which makes finding books at their level incredibly difficult.
I do not want to discourage them while they are learning English. Using high interest books not only gets kids excited about reading but also excited about learning the English language.
