This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I love the tenacity of the scholars at our school, they are not afraid to push through any barriers that stand in their way. Our school is 98% African American and Hispanic with a high majority eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. Many of our scholars come from homes where a love of reading and literacy has not been nurtured. During our time together, I expose them to quality reading materials in order to foster a love or reading and literacy. Our motto is, "the only way to become a better reader is to read"
During this time of virtual learning, we are reading quite a bit online.
I would like for each scholar to have a physical book to read, enjoy and add to their home library.
My Project
In the world of virtual learning, we need community more than ever. With each scholar having access to the same book and reading it at the same time, the opportunity exists for deeper conversations centered on the text. With so many electronic options available for our scholars, reading for pleasure is a lifelong skill that should be nurtured.
Community is needed more than ever, by donating to this project scholars will be able to build community and conversation skills by reading the same text at the same time.
The book will be added to their in home library, so that they can read it over and over again.
