This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Can you imagine reading only for comprehension? You'd miss out on allegory in The Lord of the Flies, symbolism in The Catcher in the Rye, the themes of Macbeth! My 10th grade classes focus on reading subtext so students learn not only to comprehend, but also to interpret and analyze.

I have a class of low-performing 10th graders who struggle with the motivation and skills to read, and two honors classes that are tackling analysis of subtext.

My curriculum is designed to immerse students in complex texts, taking the time to break them down into digestible parts, working to build those pieces back together to create meaning out of the whole. As the year progresses, my regular students develop the perseverance and determination to tackle these texts more and more, and my honors classes get better and better at interpreting unwritten meaning.

My Project

Teaching reading in a public school setting means my students are assigned copies of our books that are returned when they finish reading them for next year's students. In other words, they aren't allowed to mark up the texts. Yet research shows that students who engage with texts comprehend them better. Strategies like the 5 Levels of Close Reading require students to annotate the text in order to help them make meaning. Paraphrasing. Explicating. Analyzing. How can we employ these strategies effectively with books in which we cannot write? I am requesting copies of our class novel, The Catcher in the Rye for my students.

Having a set of books that each of my students can own would allow them to take ownership of their reading by annotate the text as necessary to comprehend what they are reading and develop the skills to interpret subtext as well.

They would have access to deeper levels of meaning and practice with strategies they can use for further reading development. Being able to annotate the text will help them develop the strategies of strong readers.
