My Project

Run, run, as fast as you can! Can our kindergarten engineers catch the Gingerbread Man?

In our classroom, reading is just the beginning of the adventure!

After reading How to Catch a Gingerbread Man, our young learners will become STEM engineers as they design, build, test, and improve their very own gingerbread-catching contraptions.

Using their imaginations and a variety of hands-on STEM materials, students will work independently and in teams to solve the ultimate engineering challenge: How can we design a trap to catch a clever gingerbread man without letting him escape?

Our little engineers will explore the engineering design process as they brainstorm ideas, sketch designs, select materials, construct their traps, test their creations, and make improvements based on what they observe. They will discover that engineers don't give up when something doesn't work the first time. Instead, they learn from their mistakes, try new ideas, and keep creating!

This project will also strengthen important kindergarten skills. Students will practice counting materials, comparing sizes, measuring distances, describing their designs, predicting outcomes, and explaining what happened during each test. They will develop teamwork, communication, creativity, and critical-thinking skills while learning that there can be many different solutions to the same problem.

Most importantly, this STEM adventure will bring our story to life! Students will see that books can inspire real-world investigations and that learning can be exciting, imaginative, and full of discovery.
