My students need sensory equipment and furniture for a dedicated room when they need a peaceful place to go to deal with anxiety, frustrations, and outbursts.
Our Elementary and Junior High School students are wonderful. They have the ability to be high achievers, but the reality is that they face barriers that might derail their academic progress. Our students are about 70 percent free and reduced-price lunch rate. Mobility and poverty rates are high. The average household income for our area is about $39,055. Trauma is an everyday occurrence for many of our students. Trauma can alter brain development and cause learning issues, problems focusing, and poor social skills and conflict resolution.
Our students have great potential, but we realize the need to refocus our elementary school as a trauma-informed school.
We want to turn away from punitive methods for acting out behavior and work on relationship building, conflict resolution, diffusion of angry outbursts, and use more multi-sensory approaches to help our children to cope.
My Project
The Cat Cabin will be used at both the elementary school and the junior high school to help our students cope with conflict and angry outbursts that negatively affect their education. The trauma our students have experienced can effect that brain chemistry in a negative way. Some of our students need to be taught self-regulation, how to cope with anxiety, calming techniques, and self-regulation. This room will be a less visually stimulating area that will be calming and the sensory objects will help keep the student's mind off of the current conflict he or she is experiencing.
The alternative seating, dim lighting, soft music, and sensory items have the ability to help educators short-circuit the areas of the brain that are sending "angry" messages and move our students to a calmer and peaceful place so they are able to return to the classroom.
Using a peaceful room with sensory objects we will be able to take a student out of an environment that may be triggering negative behavior and let them calm down in the sensory spot.
